1. Most important choice in life is choosing to serve the Lord
2. Second most important choice is choosing a marriage partner
As parents we have a responsibility to teach our children to choose their future spouse wisely, and not to wait to teach them until they bring home someone we don't like (aka. the cocky jock who doesn't even have the respect to open the door for your daughter or keep his hands off her on their first date). Abraham saw the importance of this decision in his son's life so he prayed for a Godly, lovely wife for his son Isaac.
Another responsibility we have as parents is raise our children (daughters in this case) to be the Godly wife they should be.
Rebekah was raised to be that wife.
When Abraham's servant, Eliezar, was sent out to find a wife for Isaac, he came across Rebekah and was struck by her loveliness. She was polite and poised, gracious and generous; she was eager to serve. Rebekah was beautiful on the outside, but he was struck more by her beautiful heart. She was close to her mother and respected her father. She was destined to be the wife of a Prince, Prince Isaac, and Isaac was destined for greatness.
She was raised to be that wife, but sadly, there was a turn of events. When some couples grow closer together, Isaac and Rebekah began to grow apart over the years. Rebekah was not a good example of honoring and respecting her husband. They allowed their twin sons to put a wedge in their marriage. They showed favoritism and started to take sides. We can learn from Rebekah's story to be cautious of disrespecting our husbands and how that can become a slippery slope causing a bigger and bigger wedge in the marriage.
Husbands need to be respected, to be looked up to and to be appreciated in order to be the leader of the household. In Rebekah's case, she continued and continued to scheme and cheat and go behind Isaac's back to make "her son" the more important son causing a bigger wedge in the family and in their marriage. WE have a choice as wives to adore our husbands and respect them OR to dishonor them and tear them down. WE can be the "glue" that builds our family stronger OR the "grease" that makes our family fall apart.
Will you be the glue or the grease?
We can model after Rebekah's loveliness
and learn from here failures.
We can teach our daughters to be lovely
and to be the glue in their family and marriage.
